Cozy Stylish Chic Creative Director Jeanne K. Chung and designers Angela Lee and Caroline Meloche brightened the dark wood-paneled library to create a space where residents can unplug. Wallpaper was added to the ceiling and the backs of the bookcases, and heavy wood blinds were replaced with soft draperies and Roman shades to make the space feel lighter. The firm used a mix of fabrics and wall coverings by Ralph Lauren Home from Designers Guild throughout the space. The designers worked with a color palette of Dunn-Edwards paints, and several chose to highlight the brand’s 2024 Color of the Year, a steely blue called Skipping Stones.

Swiss designers believed that design should be functional, minimal, and universal. The Swiss Style grid systems set a visual hierarchy that helps structure information, images, and text and strategically uses white space. The basis for the formation of a new classical system was the creation of new fonts – first of all, simple sans-serif typefaces. This process was supported by Max Miedinger and his colleague Eduard Hoffmann. In fairness, the font “Neue Haas Grotesque” was developed, which was later renamed “Helvetica” – “Swiss font” (Helvetia is one of the names of Switzerland). Helvetica was created as a clean font that could also be applied to long stretches of text.

Beyond Helvetica: The Evolution of Swiss Design in Europe

The use of large type families helped create emphasis, contrast, and hierarchy within a design. The purpose was to communicate information clearly, without persuading the audience through the same methods as commercial advertising. Furthermore, photography is a medium that portrays reality more accurately than illustration. The style of photography in many of the posters was black and white with high tonal contrast.

He sought the advice of the architect Eliel Saarinen who had offered him a fellowship at Cranbrook Academy of Art, where Charles soon became head of the Department of Industrial Design. At Cranbrook, Charles deepened his working relationship with Eliel's son Eero—with whom he would win the 1940 Museum of Modern Art Organic Furniture Competition—and found new collaborators notably Harry Bertoia and, later, Ray Kaiser. Political and social upheavals of the decade were accompanied by a resurgence of poster art addressing the civil rights movement, the women’s movement, environmentalism, and the Vietnam War. Critics of the movement considered the style cold and impersonal and thought the focus on objective principles led to formulaic solutions that generally looked the same. Advocates suggested the pure legibility of the style led to a timeless perfection of form that delivered an understated message without the exaggerated claims typical of advertising.

While designers in Europe were forging the International Typographic Style into a cohesive movement, American designers were synthesizing concepts from modern art into highly individualistic and expressive visual statements. From the 1940s through the 1960s, New York City was a major centre for innovation in design as well as the fine arts.

The country became a melting pot of designers from different cultural backgrounds. William Morris, the pioneer of the Arts and Crafts movement that originated in Britain, encouraged the return to craftsmanship. Many examples of these three similar styles included intricate patterns, floral motifs, and heavily illustrated designs.

Definition List (DL) is probably one of the most underestimated HTML elements. It’s a list element such as UL and OL, but it is supposed to present a collection of terms (DT) and descriptions (DD). Its most obvious use case is to represent dictionaries, but its potential goes way beyond that. The W3C Recommendation gives the example of a dialogue where DTs are character names and DDs are the text lines.

“Our whole goal with this space was basically to turn the lights on in the room, bring in the garden that’s outside, and kind of have an experience of a breath of fresh air,” Brosio says. Hand-painted floors were the jumping-off point for designer Amy Peltier’s soothing primary bedroom design. “It was so much work, but it turned out beautiful.” The firm wanted the space to feel “light and airy and breezy,” and incorporated fabrics and wall coverings by Thibaut in a soft color palette.

Schaefer's Canal House Chesapeake City, Maryland Chesapeake Bay Marina

schaefer's canal house chesapeake city md

I contacted the Dockmaster and he called me when the Canal was open to traffic. My only complaint has nothing to do with the marina. The restaurant has gone downhill. My guess is they have a new chef. It was prime rib ordered medium rare and arrived medium well. Then got chicken parmigiana.

LGBTQ+ friendly,

The only draw-back is that there are no showers. Even a cold water outside rinse off shower would have been nice. Nice folks running the docks (inc their staff).

Always awkward if seen as a complainer. The owner and his son were polite and the facility was a perfect stopover. Very good prices at the dock and restaurant. On our way from Cape May to Baltimore. Liked it so much we stayed a second night. Quaint town and very nice restaurant.

There are currently no photos.

Dock hands are very helpful. We overnighted on the face dock which are fixed-3 foot tide. Good basic marina with a really good restaurant. If you are picky the noise from vehicles on the bridge might bother you.

The staff was super friendly and helpful and really went out of their way for us. The restaurant was great and you are a short dinghy ride to town on the other side of the canal. No showers, laundry or grocery nearby. Schaefer's Canal House is a hidden gem along the Northern Shores of the Chesapeake Bay.

After a long run up the Chesapeake with foul current all day, we arrived at sunset. Steve stayed late to handle our lines for us and could not have been more helpful. The long face dock makes for a convenient stop when transiting the canal.

Tied-up just east of bridge but never noticed bridge noise above our heater-fans noise. Dock guy, Steve, carefully made sure we were tied with long spring lines to handle the tide. This is a great place to stay.

Wheelchair accessible elevator,

The onsite restaurant was very good. Live music was enjoyable without being too loud. Enjoyed our dinner so much we decided to go back for Sunday brunch. We are docked from May1st to Oct31st on the transit floating docks. Our vessel is definately in good hands with Dockmaster Tom & Manager Steven Connell. They are able to run this top notch facility because of the knowledgable & friendly deckhands.

Staff required to disinfect surfaces between visits,

Passed out leaflets with all kind of info. And cracking jokes the whole time. We never encountered such a helpful friendly and funny dockside assistance Restaurant was very good along with the staff. And fun watching all the canal traffic. Definitely would come back. We had a really good experience here.

Nice stop between the Cheasapeake and Cape May. In the past, we have stopped at Delaware City but this is more convenient. We were docked at a long fixed dock alongside the canal and the restaurant. Wakes from passing boats were not bad even on a weekend.

Again, great docking support. The restaurant had a live band and the food was excellent. Very pleasant stay and great stop between Cape May and Annapolis.

Location much quieter than Chesapeake Inn. Enjoyed the bike trail and restaurant accommodations. Dock hands were very helpful ,especially with their current and friendly.

The available amenities of the docks, which are located outside of a restaurant and bar, are noted on the Snag-A-Slip profile. The marina does offer restrooms, but a bath house is not an available amenity. This is a good location to stop in preparation to head down the C&D canal, and Delaware River.

Dinner reservations recommended,

Good dinner at the restaurant. Very helpful & professional, well versed in the challenges of their current. Excellent hours for transients if trying to stretch your day. Nice casual restaurant on site. Current and pilings made for a rough night. The restaurant was lively and the food was good.

Dealing with the currents in the canal and the huge concrete Chesapeake City Bridge support in the middle of the dock can be quite a challenge. And many a loud speed boat takes advantage of the good fuel prices here. But the people are friendly and the area peaceful, with the restaurant offering decent food and beverage options. Overall a nice one night stop. Be prepared and time your canal transit and docking based on tides. Check AIS for commercial traffic before departing the dock.

Kids menu,

A very convenient stop along the way. The person that helped us dock was excellent! Tied up quickly and securely. Very helpful tie up assistance. Tom was expert on getting us secured in swift currents. On site restaurant very convenient.

However not a marina - mainly dockage for restaurant & bar (which we found convenient). Therefore, no dock restrooms or showers (bathrooms at restaurant). No stores of any kind nearby, although Steve offered to have staff give us a ride to a grocery store. The dock hands were excellent. Got tied up quickly and efficiently in the current.

Wheelchair accessible parking lot,

The marina offers 30amp and 50amp shore power. While visiting, boaters will have access to great amenities including restrooms and a full provisioned Ships Store. If a floating dock is preferred, the marina will accommodate.

Does Schaefer's Canal House have a kids menu?

The restaurant was the only real bright spot for this location. We arrived late but they stuck around to help us tie up and made suggestions for the best fendering arrangements. Although we were tied on the river face dock we had no wake issues all night. Great food at the restaurant. Tom the Dockmaster was very friendly and helpful. He guided us in to our spot over the radio and took our lines on arrival. Lively place with live music over the weekend.

Payment Options

Very friendly and competent Dock Master, Steve, guided us right into fuel dock and then around to out spot on the bulkhead. Despite passing ships, there was very little rocking from wakes. Restaurant was good and steps from the boat. This is a really nice joint.

The docks and power were very new and more than adequate. Steve and his team provide an excellent experience. The location is great and we got to see the swapping of pilots on a vehicle carrier ship right from our boat. Good spot for waiting on the current and getting a great meal at the restaurant. Dock hands were great and very helpful. Also a great walking and bike path if you're looking for a place to stretch your legs.

(Olivia Marro, Leah Stubbs, Scott Seisler) Schaefer's is without question your #1 way point when transiting the C&D Canal. Staff was great - and knowledgeable of local conditions and setting lines for the 3+ foot tide swings. Restaurant next to dock was excellent. Not sure if there was a 'go fast' boat convention in town, but the exhaust noise from noon 'til dark was really ridiculous. The high outside dock in front of the restaurant prohibited us from getting on and off of the boat at low tide. The boat traffic both large and small, rocked us all night long. There is no bath house, so that is certainly a “con”.

I had a cold beer and thought of the sounds as a funky reggae beat. Great location midpoint on the C&D canal. While Schaefer's Canal House is an awesome marina, they also have an amazing bar and restaurant attached to it that second to none. During the season, you will find live music and events at The Lighthouse Bar on site. Additionally, the restaurant has beautiful deck seating that overlooks the water, with both indoor and outdoor dining options available. Filled with a wide variety of seafood specialties and casual bites, there is a taste here that will please any pallet.

Convenient spot to stop with a restaurant at your door. There are no shower facilities and the bathrooms are serviceable. If you have tried the above and still do not see availability, the marina may be full for your dates or unable to accommodate your vessel size. Use our search bar to find nearby marinas or private listings. Dockmaster and crew were excellent in meeting all our needs.

Great stay at Schaefer's marina. Stopped at the fuel dock and took on 750 gallons of fuel. Dual pumps made fueling easy and fast. Nice discount for large quantity of fuel. Great line handling from the dock hands. Moved tp the bulkhead for the overnight stay.

As to the accommodations there is a substantial amount of current through the marina and the tidal change is roughly 3’. With the marina only offering pilings that makes it tough to position bumpers for cushioning as the shifting current bounces the boat around. Lots of knocking throughout the night. If you’re looking for a fun spot to grab a bite and drink this is the place. If looking for a quiet night of sleep it’s not the best.

Located in Chesapeake City, MD, the deep-water marina is nestled on Back Creek, which branches off of the Elk River. The facility has undergone some fantastic rehabilitations to both the dock area as well as the main house. Boaters are able to dock at either the fixed dock when booking with shore power, or the floating docks if power is not needed.
